Retinal Lasers

What is LASER?

LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. It is a high energy beam of light which is focused on the eye using a special lens and used to treat several disorders. Retinal lasers are different from the widely performed LASIK which is used to correct the glass number of the eye and YAG capsulotomy which is used to clear the film behind intraocular lenses implanted during cataract surgery.

What disorders are treated using retinal laser?

Retinal laser are used to treat:

  • Diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema
  • Vein occlusions and other blood supply disorders of the retina
  • Retinal breaks or tears
  • Strengthen weak retinal areas as a preparatory step for LASIK surgery
  • Central serous retinopathy
  • Retinopathy of prematurity among other indications

How is retinal laser performed?

Retinal laser is a minor procedure that is performed in the outpatient department (OPD). Patients can resume their normal lifestyle almost immediately following the laser and don’t need to get admitted.

  • Drops will be instilled in your eyes to widen (dilate) the pupils.
  • Numbing drops will be instilled in your eye.
  • A focusing lens will be placed in contact with your eye (Slit-lamp delivery), alternatively light may be focused into your eye using a non-contact lens (Laser indirect ophthalmoscopy) depending on the disease being treated.

What precautions do you have to take after the laser?

There are generally no restrictions or precautions following the laser. Since no cuts are taken in the eye you can resume your normal lifestyle immediately including reading, writing, watching television, using your mobile phones, cooking etc. You will be required to use anti-inflammatory drops in your eye for a few days as prescribed.
