Retina Surgeries

What are retina surgeries?

Retina surgeries are performed for retina detachments, diabetic vitrectomies, macular holes, epiretinal membrane removals, intraocular lens (IOL) or nucleas drops, sclera fixed intraocular lenses (SFIOL), endophthalmitis/infections and ocular trauma management.

Are retina surgeries an emergency?

As a thumb rule the earlier the retina surgery is performed once indicated, the better the results. Certain surgeries such as those for retinal detachments, endophthalmitis, nucleas and IOL drops are emergency surgeries. However with modern technology these can be managed well.

What can you expect when undergoing retina surgeries?

Retina surgeries have undergone considerable advancements over the years resulting in improved surgical outcomes. In addition patients do not require admission and can leave the hospital shortly following these surgeries. Prior to the surgery drops are instilled in the eyes to widen (dilate) the pupil and an injection is given around the eye to aneasthetise it. Hence you will not experience any pain during the surgery. Following the surgery you will be required to take medications prescribed by your doctor and keep your eyes clean. Many surgeries require you to maintain a particular head posture for a few days which will be explained by your doctor. This is very important for the success of the surgery.
