What is Optical coherence tomography (OCT)?
It is a painless, non-invasive imaging test which uses light waves to take cross-sectional pictures of your retina. The test involves taking a quick photograph/scan of your eye without touching it so that your doctor can see each of the retinal layers, measure their thickness and judge your response to treatment. It is done for age related macular degeneration, swelling in the macula (central part of the retina) such as in diabetic macular edema, macular holes and epiretinal membranes to name a few. At Dr. Lubhani’s Advanced Retina & Eye Centre we have a fully automated, precise and high resolution OCT from Topcon, Japan.
What is fundus photography?
Fundus photography is the process of taking serial photographs of the interior of your eye through the pupil to visualize the retina and optic nerve. Before the procedure, we will administer an eye drop to widen (dilate) your pupil. It is a quick, non invasive and non-contact procedure which takes a few seconds. It is useful in documenting and monitoring diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, posterior uveitis and disc edema among others.
What is B scan ultrasonography?
B-scan Ultrasonography, also known as just B-scan or Brightness scan, is a two-dimensional cross-sectional view of the eye. It is a painless, non-invasive test, where a device is placed on the outside of the closed eyelid. Sound waves are generated which are reflected back to the device by tissue in its path, which are translated into an image. It is used to visualize the inside of the eye when the view into the eye is obstructed by cataract or bleeding in the eye, to diagnose retinal and choroidal detachments, tumours and other diseases behind the eye. At Dr. Lubhani’s Advanced Retina & Eye Centre we have the latest, high resolution compound touch B scan from Quantel, France.
